First Day of School - Part 1

I sent Kyle off for his first day of high school this morning, and it got me thinking. First, WHY must they make school so early in the morning? After a summer of late hours and sleeping in, who wants to get up at 6am? Crazy! Second, in all of Kyle's life, this is the second time I've sent him off to school. The first was his first day of Kindergarten, and I cried like a baby. (Admittedly, I got a little misty this morning too. It is HIGH SCHOOL after all.) All the rest of the time I was either at school or work and his grandma got him ready - even sending him to school one time with a 104 degree temperature and FIVE shirts on!! I got called from work for that one and got to spend about six hours in the emergency room as he lay there completely listless, raging hot, and pumped full of Motrin and Tylenol every couple hours. Wasn't fun at all.

So this morning I get him up which was oddly easy since he was already up. Amazing! (Actually, not so amazing as it was really the dogs that got us both up well before the alarm.) He brought out his backpack and as he was making his lunch, he informed me that he didn't feel good. Now, he's complained of a headache for two days, saying that his neck hurt and it was making his head hurt. Tension. Stressed about high school in a new state, new town, new school, new teachers. Understandable, but not enough to miss the first day of school. After he told me he didn't feel well, he went to the bathroom and "tried" to throw up, but couldn't. Nerves. Still not enough to miss the first day of school.

As I sent him off to meet the bus at the end of the yard, I wondered if he really is sick. Is he coming down with something, and I'm just being mean sending him to school that way? It's not the first time he would be sent to school sick, but it would be the first time I sent him that way. I reassured myself it's just nerves. After this first week of adjusting to all the newness, he'll be fine. Right?

I guess we'll find out when he gets home at four. Unless I get a call earlier. I doubt if I will though.
